A FoodDork's Toolbox
In
many ways, cooking is like woodworking and construction: You're creating
things, you get to show off the results of your labors and you get to
work with lots of nifty things that might possibly remove your fingers.
Yes, just like any other hobbyist craftsman, we FoodDorks love our gadgets
and tools.
Here are some of the favorite items in our kitchens:
Power Tools
• Kitchen-Aid 5-quart stand mixer (the one in Mike's kitchen
is evil, however; it keeps turning out cookie dough for some odd reason)
• Kitchen-Aid food processor (makes great pizza dough in a hurry)
• Crock pot (does that count as a power tool?)
Sharp Objects
• Chef's Knife (in Mike's kitchen, an 8-inch Wusthof Classic)
• Carving Knife (Also Wusthof Classic)
• Bread Knife (Ditto)
• Paring Knife (Ditto)
• Ginsu (or higher quality) scissors (in Rick's kitchen, excellent
for cutting pre-cooked bacon, crab shells, and a host of things for
which you might ordinarily use a knife)
Gizmos
• Basic food scale (Polder coil-style)
• Probe thermometer (Pyrex brand)
• Instant-read digital thermometer (Also Pyrex brand)
• Plunger-style liquid-and-dry measuring cup
Miscellaneous
• Plastic shrimp deveiner (only costs a couple of bucks and
takes the shell
and vein off easily, almost one motion)
• Tongs (several sets and lengths)
• Boos carving board (treated with official Boos Mystery Oil)
• Heavy-duty oven mitt (Mike's daughter thought he was training
falcons)
• Salad spinner (Mike uses a $4 crank version from WalMart that
hasn't worn out yet)
• Potato ricer (Mike's has turned out many a loaf of sweet potato
bread)
• Crank-style cheese grater (Pampered Chef)
• Classic Batter Bowl (also Pampered Chef)
• Aprons (Mike has two favorites: one of brightly colored fabric
that he sewed myself, and the other an official FoodDork apron from
the FoodDork
Store; shameless plug)
• Chef's tunic (for special occasions; a Christmas present from
Mike's wife)
