OK, perhaps a little more explanation is in order
Posted
8:55 AM by Mike
I've always enjoyed cooking, and for years I played around in the kitchen, pretending I knew what I was doing, but never really applying myself to the study of food and the best ways to prepare it. Then one day, something spiritual and profound happened in my life: My cable company finally picked up The Food Network. My subsequent addiction to that network's programming gave me the inspiration to do what I've always wanted: Buckle down and really learn how to cook.
I know: Inspired by The Food Network. How dorky can you get?
Still, dorky can be fun, and that's what this site is about. I've invited my good friend Rick, who also appreciates the joys of cooking, to help me out. The purpose of our blog is to chronicle our efforts to become better cooks, while hoping to inspire those who might be wary of cooking to stop whining and get into the kitchen.
You'll be seeing more than just our ramblings, however, as we add links to our favorite cooking sites, build the ultimate FoodDork's Library, design the Ultimate FoodDork's Kitchen and more. There will be some recipes here, but this won't turn into a recipe database; there are way too many wonderful resources out there already. But we'll share some of the stuff we've come up with ourselves.
As you peruse the site and, I hope, learn a thing or two, remember that neither Rick nor I are, by any means, experts. We're still learning, and that's the point: Perhaps by sharing our experiences in learning all the neat stuff about food and cooking, you'll have fewer bumps, but just as much fun, on your road to a delicious, made-all-by-yourself meal.

Alton Brown.com

Was just trying out the BlogThis! function, so I decided to add a link to one of my favorite food-related sites, Alton Brown.com. Brown, of course, is the host of "Good Eats" on Food Network, and is one of the most entertaining and informative food educators in the history of the small screen. On his site, he offers a lot of tips and advice and includes a nifty illustrated guide to the essential devices for the kitchen. I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to call Brown a FoodDork, but he certainly is a hero to all FoodDorks worldwide. Check out his site.
Why Grown Men Cook

They get to play with: Matches, fire, sharp objects, their food They get to snack before dinner, "tasting" their preparations No broccoli They get to stay in the kitchen and shoo other people away They are the ones with the evil "I alone know what's in this" grin Did I mention no broccoli?

Why cooking is so much fun
Posted
10:01 PM by Mike
OK, here's my preliminary take on why cooking is so much fun:
Because, next to actually giving birth to a new, tiny human, preparing a meal is, arguably, the ultimate in creativity, and creativity is good. (Why is it the ultimate? Well, because you get to eat it!)
The journey is just as exciting as the destination.
Lots of tools and gadgets.
One word: Shopping.
Learning. You're never done learning.
Unless you enter a cook-off, your only competition is mediocrity.
What is a Dork?

OK, perhaps you're a little apprehensive about labeling yourself a "dork." It's really not all that bad.
Forget about dictionary definitions or what you think it means. To today's teenagers, represented by my daughter (who gave me the FoodDork name) and her myriad friends, a dork is merely someone who is, perhaps, a little too obsessive about one thing or another. Face it, if you have a choice between doing Necessary Things and Favorite Things, and Favorite Things wins out three times out of four, then you're probably a dork about something. Live with it.
If you're at this site, most likely you're like me, a dork about food and cooking. Being in the kitchen is just more fun than the law should allow.
But if you're still unsure about yourself, or if you're adamant that you might be a foodie or a gourmet or a gourmand or a connoisseur but never a dork, here's some simple proof and lots of food (pardon the pun) for thought.
Are you a FoodDork?

Have you been late to an important appointment because you had to set the tape for "Emeril's Big EasyBash?" When someone asks you what power tools you own, is the first thing that pops into your head your KitchenAid 5-quart stand mixer? Have you agonized, seemingly for hours, in the aisle of your local linen/kitchen store over which style of utensil holder to buy? When positioning your Boos carving block on the counter, are you careful to make sure the Boos brand is facing out where everyone can see it? Have you ever gotten into an argument over who would make the better dinner guest, Paula Deen or Rachael Ray? Is one of your New Year's resolutions to stop using the word "chiffonade" so much in normal conversation? Have you ever worried that a poor whisking technique might lead to carpal tunnel syndrome? Well, if you answered "yes" to any of those questions, chances are you're a Food Dork like us.
More pages and much more information is to come. Stay tuned. In the meantime, visit our Food Dork Store and show the world that you're a Food Dork and darn proud of it!
